Mission

The Secure Building Council is a 501.3c non profit organization that seeks to create safe and secure built environments.

We do this through the development of the industries first physical security certification program, SHIELD, which helps raise awareness, provide education, and foster collaboration among building owners, property management companies, architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and other stakeholders.

SBC prioritizes the well-being of occupants by considering physical security early in the building design process to elevate resilient practices that protect occupants against various man-made threats while enhancing the space around us.

The 4 pillars of the certification program

PHYSICAL SECURITY

is the cornerstone of the SHIELD certification, designed to enhance the security of buildings. This pillar emphasizes practical and cost-effective measures, such as reinforcing entry points, implementing basic access control systems, and maintaining visible surveillance, to deter unauthorized entry and ensure a safe environment.

TECHNOLOGY SECURITY

Technology security encompasses the critical decisions involved in designing a secure building, from determining the optimal number of cameras to selecting the right tech stack. It’s not just about ensuring cybersecurity; it’s about thoughtfully integrating and strategically deploying every technological element, from surveillance to access control, so they holistically complement the building design.

OPERATIONS

Is dedicated to the efficient management of security practices and emergency preparedness for buildings.. This pillar emphasizes the implementation of straightforward security policies, regular basic training for personnel, and effective communication systems. It ensures that security operations are smoothly integrated into the daily functioning of the building, providing a coordinated and responsive approach to any incidents.

COMPLIANCE AND LIABILITY

Addresses the legal and insurance considerations essential for comprehensive security in buildings. This pillar focuses on ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, managing risk through appropriate insurance coverage, and implementing best practices for liability mitigation. It aims to protect the building and its stakeholders from potential legal and financial repercussions, fostering a culture of accountability and proactive risk
